Tokyo, Japan – WAITINGROOM is pleased to announce Yuki IIYAMA’s special exhibition, “100 Living Tales”,through July 11th to August 16th at the gallery. Iiyama examines the relationship between the individual and society/history by using the archives and spoken words of others as a starting point. The intersection of documentary and the artist’s own view of the world, as seen through the process, is captured in photographs, video, texts and objects associated with them, as well as the actual records, and all are constructed in the installation work. The work exhibited in this exhibition is an adaptation of the work “100 Living Tales”, which was presented at the Setouchi Triennale 2016, and will be reconfigured and re-exhibited in the gallery space. The work consists of several panels with “mysterious stories” collected from people living on the islands of Setouchi, and the video projected onto three screens documenting the actions of a man who has been taking care of abandoned cats living in inhabited island for about 20 years.
This is a special exhibition planned to be held in conjunction with Yokohama Triennale 2020 (scheduled to be held from July 17th), in which Yuki IIYAMA will participate. It will be the first time that “100 Living Tales” will be exhibited in Tokyo.
About the artist
Born in 1988 in Kanagawa, currently lives and works in both Kanagawa and Tokyo. Graduated from the department of painting at Joshibi University of Arts and Design in 2011 and finished her MFA program at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013.
