Tokyo, Japan – WAITINGROOM is pleased to announce a special solo exhibition by Rikako Kawauchi, drawings, through November 29th to December 27th, 2020. This exhibition celebrates her first publication of all drawings, showcasing about 30 drawings from the publication. Concurrently with this exhibition, her another solo exhibition of the same title will be held at the “OIL by Bijutsu Techo” gallery in Shibuya Parco from November 25th to December 8th. We hope you will take this opportunity to visit both exhibitions and enjoy the world of drawing by Rikako Kawauchi.
When Kawauchi graduated from Tama Art University and exhibited at “Shiseido Art Egg Vol. 9” in 2015, her primary materials were paper, pencil, and watercolors, and she filled the gigantic space of the Shiseido Gallery with only drawings, leaving a vivid impression to the audiences. The range of expression expanded over time, as did the materials she used, including oil paintings, wire, rubber tubes, neon tubes, resin, and so on. However, drawing has always been at the root of her work, and she says that it is the starting point for all her expression. Drawing has always been and will always remain an important part of Kawauchi’s work, so that is why we choose the drawings to present the first book of her career that looks back the history of drawings from 2012 to 2020. Please enjoy the book along with the exhibition.

About the artist, Rikako KAWAUCHI
Born in 1990 in Tokyo, currently lives and works in Tokyo. Graduated from Tama Art University with the Master’s degree in 2017. Starting from KAWAUCHI’s own interest in the action of eating, she focuses on the subject of body, mind and ambiguous relationship between them. She depicts SELF and OTHERS as motifs in the scenes of eating food, having sex, and many other ways of communication where different elements intersect. Using a very strong and characteristic line, she’s been expanding her ways of impression from painting and drawing to wire sculpture and neon sculpture. Her recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition “Myth & Body” (2020, Mitsukoshi Contemporary Gallery, Tokyo), group exhibition “drawings” (2019, Gallery Koyanagi, Tokyo), solo exhibition “human wears human / bloom wears bloom” (2018, Kamakura Gallery, Kanagawa), solo exhibition “Tiger Tiger burning bright” (2018, WAITINGROOM, Tokyo), solo exhibition “Back is confidential space. Behind=Elevator” (2016, WAITINGROOM, Tokyo), solo exhibition “SHISEIDO ART EGG vol.9 : Go down the throat” (2015, Shiseido Gallery, Tokyo) and many others.
