WAITINGROOM will participate in the art fair “Tennoz Contemporary,” held at TERRADA ART COMPLEX (Tokyo) from Thursday, September 10 to Sunday, September 13. At ANOMALY’s booth on the 4th floor of the venue, we will present four two-dimensional works and two sculptures by Masaho Anotani, alongside six two-dimensional works by Saori Miyake, with a focus on her cyanotype works.

Masaho Anotani

Born in 1991 in Hyogo. Anotani’s work stems from his daily activities and social encounters, along with the sensations he gain from nature. His artistic expressions are the instantaneous reactions that emerge from these moments. He has presented his work in various forms, including painting, drawing, collage, performance, poetry, and photography. He expresses the universe in a myriad of ways across its diversity. The fundamental questions of “What is oneself?” and “What is the world?” mediate between oneself and the world, at times guiding primitive impulses, at times raising the breath of an invisible world within a non-verbal realm similar to prayer. He gazes into this invisible world and imagine materials suitable for expression. In addition to the simple act of drawing, he approaches painting with an improvised physical expression born from a succession of primitive actions such as scratching, pasting, and scraping. Saori Miyake

Born in 1975 in Gifu, Miyake received her MFA from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2000. She currently lives and works in Kyoto. Miyake has been working with a photogram technique that prints “shadows” of drawings by reversing existing images she has encountered, drawing them on transparent sheets where negative and positive space have been flipped, and then exposing them over a layer of photosensitive paper. The images, which are derived from looking at the world once objectified by the camera, poetically reveal narrative, fragmentation, and multilayeredness. Miyake considers the “act of seeing” not only a physical act, but also a psychological phenomenon. In recent years, Miyake has been working on video works that reflect the ideas she has developed through creating these photograms, as well as cyanotypes that are exposed to sunlight. Through these practices, she continues to extract “painterly images” from the process through which human beings direct their gaze toward various things, transform them into images, and layer new gazes onto images that have already been shared.
