Tokyo, Japan – waitingroom is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of Rikako Kawauchi at the gallery from December 19th, 2015 to February 7th, 2016 (gallery’s winter break starts from December 28th, 2015 to January 7th, 2016). Rikako Kawaguchi uses lines to depict her observation on the meaning of our existence and human relation across various media including drawing, painting, steel wire, rubber tube, neon light etc. Through her works, she showed us how powerful the strength lies in the simple form of a line. Her coming solo exhibition “back is confidential space. Behind=Elevator” will show the new works including twelve drawings, three paintings, two neon works, and several works in steel wire and rubber tube.

About the artist

Rikako Kawauchi (b. 1990 in Tokyo). A current graduate student in Department of Painting, Tama Art University with focus on oil painting. She is an emerging artist following being selected in ART IN THE OFFICE, the open call program held by MONEX Inc, and solo exhibition at Shiseido Art Egg which was awarded. Her recent exhibitions include “Collector and Artist: Rikako Kawauchi Solo Exhibition” (T-Art Gallery, Tokyo, 2015), “The 1st CAF, Winning Awards Exhibition (Kenjiro Hosaka Award)” (TABLOID GALLERY, Tokyo, 2014) etc. This is her first solo exhibition with waitingroom.

There is the backside of the elevator in front of us

The title of the exhibition “back is confidential space. Behind=Elevator” conveys Rikako Kawauchi’s interest in the space between different worlds. As the artist statement “Elevator is at the back we see” hints, Kawauchi, who also thinks “the back and the front are the same” and “entrance and exit are the same,” is in constant search for the incredibility of the world. What if the world at the back is connected to a totally different world… Kawauchi pictures the connection between the world and the new possibility, which appears remarkable because of the mutability. The wide possibilities she pictures are encompassed in her works through lines.

Artist Statement

Elevator and back are the same.
It is just there is back of the elevator that we see.
Back is behind
Back is unconscious
Back is gravity
Back is regret
Back is childhood
Back is water
Back is ancient
Back is unrecognizable
Back is dream
Back is hole
Back is banality of evil
Back is society
Back is the truth
Back is the moment
Back is dazzling
Back is someone else’s viewpoint
Back is inside
Back is….
