To celebrate the publication of Fumika Tsuchitori’s first book of drawings, WAITINGROOM (Tokyo) will hold “Drawings,” a special solo exhibition of around 30 drawings from the book from April 13 (Sat) to May 12 (Sun), 2024. Concurrently, from April 17 (Wed) to May 12 (Sun), a solo exhibition of the same title by Tsuchitori will be held at NADiff a/p/a/r/t (Ebisu, Tokyo), also showcasing about 30 drawings. Meanwhile, a solo exhibition “Drawings (+),” featuring several drawings and paintings, will be held in the gallery room at BABY The Coffee Brew Club, in the newly opened Tokyu Plaza Harajuku Harakado in Harajuku, Tokyo. We hope you will take this opportunity to visit these three exhibitions and enjoy the world of Fumika Tsuchitori’s drawings.

Tsuchitori has been creating paintings with the motif of two people in an intimate relationship or two separate entities within a single person, as if they were melting into each other. These paintings, which can be broadly categorized into two series, “I and You” and “a scene,” express a dense atmosphere in which subject and object are mixed up, and all borders are blurred. For Tsuchitori, drawings are a familiar media, with a different scope from paintings. In her prolific drawings, we can see how images are captured even more instantaneously than in her paintings. The drawings that Tsuchitori has been experimenting with and accumulating on a daily basis are not merely studies for paintings: they are fascinating as autonomous works that might be described as another kind of tableau. This is the first book of drawings by Tsuchitori in her career that offers a glimpse into the source material and inspiration for her paintings. We hope you will enjoy the book as well as the exhibitions.
