STATEMENT

Saori Miyake is interested in how humans direct their gazes towards all kinds of tangible and intangible phenomena, which they then attempt to visualize as images and subsequently share in their realities. Her work is inspired by the daily repetition of this process, in which someone sees an image that has already been seen by someone else. She refers to images that are brewed through such a chain of gazes as “painterly imagery,” with reference to all its multilayered meanings. With the vast number of images flooding our contemporary spaces of living, a large part of our cognition and experience is influenced by painterly imagery. Painterly imagery is, in this sense, something always in flux, influenced by the desires and circumstances of each moment. Her practice of using these phenomena as the source of her work, does not merely reproduce images seen in the past, but rather reflects and questions life in the present in a way that weaves into it the uncertainties of the future.

The photogram is a method that Miyake has been working with for many years as a means of “touching” the countless images that people have shared with each other. Most of the works use existing images that she encountered in various ways as motifs. They are created by drawing multiple drawings on a transparent sheet of paper, which are then superimposed on photographic paper and exposed to develop the shadows of the drawings. This group of works, conceived through a method that traces back to the origin of the shadow as an image, while also investigating the composition of an image from the back side, presents an ambiguous expansion of media, coupled with a depth that invites the viewer to the nether expanses of the image. In recent years, Miyake has also been working on video works that reflect her thinking that has developed through her engagement with photograms and works involving the positioning of found objects. Her attempt to extract the “painterly imagery” inherent in everyone’s gazes has found expanded scope with new forms of expression, allowing our existence, which is at the same time private and social, to emerge polyphonically.
