Tokyo, Japan – WAITINGROOM is pleased to announce a group exhibition “10TH” from October 9th to November 15th 2020 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the gallery. The exhibition was divided into two parts: a group exhibition of two-dimensional works in the first half and a group exhibition of video works in the second half. This will be a lively group exhibition with a total of nine artists, including our represented artists and artists who have held exhibitions with us in the past. In conjunction with the opening of this 10th anniversary exhibition, our website will also be renewed. We will also open a VIEWINGROOM where we will post works and articles that will be introduced only online. Please enjoy both the exhibition and the website.

The Japanese artist unit by Kensuke Sembo and Yae Akaiwa formed in 1996 on the internet. Starting in 2000, they started their activities in an actual space, presenting installation work, performance and event organize. Their experimental projects are typically humorous and innovative explorations of the paradoxes of digital and analog computer networked and actual environments in our lives. In 2006, they won the Golden Nica for Net Vision category at Prix Ars Electronica. In 2012, they formed Internet Secret Society named “IDPW” and have been organizing “Internet Yami-Ichi” in both Japan and abroad since then. They live and work in New York since 2015. Rikako KAWAUCHI
Born in 1990 in Tokyo, currently lives and works in Tokyo. Graduated from Tama Art University with the Master’s degree in 2017. Starting from KAWAUCHI’s own interest in the action of eating, she focuses on the subject of body, mind and ambiguous relationship between them. She depicts SELF and OTHERS as motifs in the scenes of eating food, having sex, and many other ways of communication where different elements intersect. Using a very strong and characteristic line, she’s been expanding her ways of impression from painting and drawing to wire sculpture and neon sculpture. Her recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition “Myth & Body” (2020, Mitsukoshi Contemporary Gallery, Tokyo), group exhibition “drawings” (2019, Gallery Koyanagi, Tokyo), solo exhibition “human wears human / bloom wears bloom” (2018, Kamakura Gallery, Kanagawa), solo exhibition “Tiger Tiger burning bright” (2018, WAITINGROOM, Tokyo), group exhibition ”Museum of Together” (2017, SPIRAL, Tokyo), solo exhibition “Back is confidential space. Saya OKUBO
Born in 1992 in Fukuoka, currently lives and works in Kyoto. Graduated from Kyoto University of Art and Design with the Master’s degree in 2017. She is an artist who creates paintings in which two separate elements coexist: a symbolic image expressed as an outline and a phenomelal image undulating with a sense of materiality. Her recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition “They” (2020, WAITINGROOM, Tokyo), group exhibition “Island with ONI” (2019, WAITINGROOM, Tokyo), solo exhibition “a doubtful reply” (2018, WAITINGROOM, Tokyo), group exhibition “Art Students Exhibition 2017” (2017, SEZON ART GALLERY, Tokyo), group exhibition “movement 2016 – 1st movement -“ (2016, ARTZONE, Kyoto), group exhibition “HERE I AM KUAD×TUNA Exchange Exhibition” (2015, Na paid Art Gallery, Taipei, Taiwan). Her work attracted a lot of attention when she won the Masami Shiraishi Award at the 4th CAF Award Winning Exhibition (Daikanyama Hillside Forum, Tokyo), a group exhibition she participated in the fall of 2017.
Naho KAWABE
Born in 1976 in Fukuoka, currently lives and works in Germany and Japan. She graduated from Musashino Art University in 1999 and University of Fine Arts of Hamburg with MFA degree in 2006. She is an artist who works across media, including video and installations that combine multiple objects under the theme of material transformation. Fumika TSUCHITORI
Born in 1995 in Hyogo, currently lives and works in Kyoto. Graduated from the department of art and craft at Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2020. Through her two series, “I and You”, which depicts two people, and “a scene”, which extracts elements such as color and shape from a landscape, she has been working on the theme of the distance between people, the diversity of “seeing”, and the irreplaceability of specific objects. Yuki IIYAMA
Born in 1988 in Kanagawa, currently lives and works in both Kanagawa and Tokyo. Graduated from the MFA program at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2013. She is an artist who examines the relationship between the individual and society and history, starting from the records produced by others and the words spoken by others, and expresses the intersection of the documentary and the world as seen by the artist herself in installation works that combine photographs, videos, actual records, texts related to these records, and objects. Nobuaki ITOH
Born in 1981 in Nara, currently lives and works in Nara and Kyoto. He graduated from Kyoto University of Arts and Design in the major of Fine Art in 2006 and obtained a Ph.D. in Art at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2016. Yusuke SHIBATA
Born in 1980 in Fukuoka, currently lives and works in Chiba. He graduated from Musashino Art University in the major of painting in 2005 and obtained a MFA in Printmaking in Fine Arts at Musashino Art University in 2007. He mainly works in video, photography and sculpture, and creates installation work with them, focusing on the ambiguity and uncertainty of the reality. He conducted research on video history in 11 cities in six Southeast Asian countries for his 2019 Japan Foundation Asia Fellowship. His recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition “Public and Freedom III” (2020, Shinjuku ISETAN MEN’S 2F, Tokyo), screening “VIDEO BATTLE Yusuke Shibata” (2019, Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta, Indonesia), solo exhibition “Meeting Point” (2018, Yet Thirtieth Experimental Art Space, Hong Kong), group exhibition “OKU-NOTO Triennnale” (2017, across Suzu City in Ishikawa Prefecture, Ishikawa), solo exhibition “Public and Freedom II” (2017, WAITINGROOM, Tokyo), solo exhibition “Public and Freedom” (Art Center Ongoing, Tokyo, 2016), and many others in Japan and abroad. He is a member of the Ongoing Collective and also organizes Freestyle Photo Battles.
Saori MIYAKE
Born in 1975 in Gifu, currently lives and works in Osaka. Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts with the Master’s Degree in 2000. Since 2003, she has been creating “photograms,” drawings in which the image is reversed on transparent film and developed on photographic paper. In this day and age, when we are inundated with an enormous amount of images, she dares to place importance on the act of looking at images, and develops an attempt to extract the “pictorial image” that is inherent in people’s eyes beyond time in a polyphonic manner.
